An amateur paleontologist recently discovered a new species of pterosaur, a flying reptile that lived alongside dinosaurs around 100 million years ago. The fossilized bones were found in western Queensland, Australia, and have been identified as belonging to Haliskia peterseni, a new genus and species of pterosaur. With a wingspan of approximately 4.6m, Haliskia was a fearsome predator that hunted fish and squid-like cephalopods in an inland sea. It lived alongside dinosaurs during the Mesozoic Era and would have needed to come ashore to lay eggs. This discovery is significant as fewer than 25 sets of pterosaur remains have been found in Australia since the 1980s.
